Five Athletes Set for Olympics, Number of Officials Not Confirmed

With only three athletes qualifying and two wild cards, Sri Lanka will only field five competitors at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris—the fewest since the 1984 Games.

Although it has been customary for officials to outnumber competitors by a startling margin, it is unknown how many authorities will compete in the Olympics.

Only three Sri Lankan track and field athletes joined the two swimmers who were eligible for wild card entry since, unlike in the past, they will no longer earn wild card entries.

No male athlete qualified for the Paris Olympics, and Yupun Abeykoon of Sri Lanka Athletics was entered in the event for the "universality" (wildcard) spot.

It is also said that Abeykoon is still recovering from an injury.

Based on her strong results, Asian Games gold winner Tharushi Karunaratne has moved up to 45th place in the "Road to Paris 24" rankings, according to World Athletics' most recent rankings, which were revised last week.

She is one of the athletes from Sri Lanka who qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. At the moment, she is the most driven female athlete in the nation, possessing the drive to compete against the best athletes worldwide.

Despite her small frame, she possesses an incredible capacity to complete a race with great energy and has frequently climbed up to the head of the pack of finishers.

In the World Athletics standings, Tharushi had earned a hard-earned 45th place finish out of 48 qualifying berths. Her entry into the women's 800m competition at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris has been secured by her accomplishment.

Dilhani Lekamge, a javelin thrower from Sri Lanka, improved to 26th place and is the other athlete to qualify. It was after her Nationals performances that she saw this progress.

According to Sri Lanka Athletics (SLA), Aruna Dharshana's fate would become clearer later. According to the standings, he is ranked 51st.

Kyle Abeysinghe and Ganga Seneviratne, two swimmers, have reserved their spots for the Olympic Games by using wild card entry. This type of entrance without qualified representation has only been granted to the swimmers from Sri Lanka.

Additionally, shuttler Viren Nettasinghe has confirmed her place in the contingent, making Sri Lanka's delegation to an Olympic Games the smallest ever.

Rumesh Tharanga, a javelin thrower from Sri Lanka who did not meet the qualifying standards for Paris, had the tenth longest throw in the world this season. Sri Lanka Athletics has submitted an appeal to take this into consideration and give Tharanga an Olympic place.

The request was submitted by the National Olympic Committee on behalf of the International Olympic Committee to the track and field governing body.

Rumesh Tharanga's best throw this season is ranked tenth in the world, hence we requested that he be allowed to compete in the Olympics.

According to Sri Lanka Athletics secretary Saman Kumara, "The NOC had appealed to the IOC on our behalf."
