Weligama is a town on Sri Lanka's southern coast that is part of the Southern Province. The name Weligama, which alludes to the region's sandy sweep bay, literally translates as "sandy village." It is located at an elevation of 9 meters above sea level and is around 144 kilometers south of Colombo.
Weligama is a well-known tourist attraction with a number of boutique hotels and an offshore islet called Taprobane which is the only privately owned island in Sri Lanka at the moment and has a villa built by the French Count de Mauny.
A figure of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, carved into the surrounding rock, is one of several historical landmarks in the Weligama region. Locally, it is referred to as Kusta Raja Gala.
Weligama is known for its expertise in producing beeralu lace. It has persisted as a traditional skill since the 16th Century in the Weligama coastal region, with many homes creating crochet and tatting lace.
Additionally, the region is well-known for its distinctive stilt fisherman, who raise a single pole in the chest-deep sea with their fishing pole to catch small fish.
